MPG Newsletter October 2019

Thank you for reading our first monthly newsletter!
We want to start sharing with you, our members, what we get up to each month and keep you informed on what’s happening. September was a busy month for the MPG.

Pivotal / Unpaid Work
We were co-sponsors of Pivotal Music Conference in Birmingham, where we took over Giraffe Audio for a day and hosted 3 panels and a feedback centre. The event was well-attended, with topics including, ‘Self-Producing Artists: How to Get the Best Results’ ‘Spec Work – Should You Ever Work for Free’ and ‘Producer Income: Royalties you never knew you had’. The panel on spec work was an opportunity to discuss the findings of our latest piece of research on unpaid work, which has received press coverage herehere, here and here. We will be analysing the results in more detail over the coming weeks and looking at ways to ensure our members get paid. If you would like to contribute to our discussions, do drop us a line – communications@mpg.org.uk

Party Conferences
Executive Director, Olga FitzRoy has been a panellist at UK Music’s fringe events at  Liberal Democrats, Labour and Conservative party conferences, as part of the #SelfieLeave campaign for shared parental leave for the self-employed. Her op-ed in Music Week is available here. She also contributed to Radio 4’s Today programme speaking about Selfieleave and the need to protect grassroots music venues. Brexit
The MPG has been working closely with UK Music and DCMS to mitigate the effects of a no-deal Brexit. Go here to find out how it might affect you.
