Testimonials

Ste is a friend and colleage after years in bands together and around eachother. In my own bands early years I had the pleasure of having him record and master our music. He is an incredible presence in our alternative Liverpool music scene. He has always been at the forefront of exciting projects, venues and movements. He has run his band as an ever evolving collective for years and toured allover the world. When he set up his own place, What Studio, in an incredible church attic space, he instantly had a massive waiting list of people wanting to take the chance to record with him. His way of making artists comfortable enough to let out their best work is very special and can’t be taught. He is truly passionate about what he does, and is driven by a desire to aid artists in hearing their very best output. He has done so much in such a short time having his studio space, including winning a huge pot of Arts Council England funding, and I think 2022 is going to be huge for him!

After opening a studio in Liverpool in 2017 and deciding to ‘take it seriously’ huge moves have been made by Stephen as an independent Studio owner, Producer and Artist to survive and adjust to the current climate with panache. In 2021 alone Stephen produced, recorded, mixed and mastered an extensive list. https://www.whatstudio.info/clients – Underlined denoting working within the last year. Super well received critically, hitting many of the end of year lists with the works produced. A recent Arts Council project grant was successful by Stephen to help work with 12 artists and develop his Studio approach. ‘The Sound Torque podcast’ was devised and delivered with TallTreesMastering in which we spoke to artists and industry people about all things sound related. In 202 also Stephen adapted and delivered a successful Youth Music awarded program empowering young creatives and then winning charity of the year for the music and arts program he had just delivered.

Rising Star producer Stephen Cole offers a unique combination of talent, ethics, and musical excitement. A tireless audiophile, Ste’s skills expand innovatively to maximise resource use. My most familiar project is my first a.P.A.t.T. single, produced by Stephen (the band leader). The sonic agility Ste brings is remarkable, he really knows how to size up a project. He transformed my sombre piano-vocal with groove and arrangement features, and responded to my insistence we return to the intro’s first FM bass arpeggiator take (because sometimes the first ideas are best!). Ste’s diverse production projects demonstrate his deep respect for artists’ intentions and sensitivities. The artists he works with locally, nationally and internationally, trust him with their best work, for their best chance. An exciting prospect for any creative, Stephen merits this award, which he will use to shine a light on deserving artists, and champion the creativity of production through his media channels.
