Jess is the absolute queen when it comes to production, engineering and mixing on jazz and funk!
I nominated Jess in the Recording Engineer of the Year category as well, however she is equally deserving in this category. I’ve looked up to Jess as an engineer for a few years now, and the quality of the tracks that she works on is amazing, particularly within the jazz/jazz-influenced genre. Jess has both a great ear and work ethic, and deserves to have her hard work recognised!
Jess is the sort of engineer you would want with you when you have the most exciting, nerve wracking, hype-inducing or complicated session of your life. She keeps the energy calm, but engaged in the room, at literally all times. She is not only a technical wizard of the highest sorts (I ask her for all sorts of help, and she always knows the answer or calls me back later with it), but she is musically in tune with whatever genre, style or mood is around her, and will know what tools to reach for to enhance the session. I have also been lucky enough to have a preview of her most recent creative work, a remix from one of the tracks that she has engineered for, and am genuinely blown away by the creativity: cutting up beautifully recorded vocals, adding round & bouncy moog bass, and deftly rearranging horn lines, into an emotive, dancing soul-house track. She is one to watch, and I look forward to listening to what musical gold she is to be been a part of next.
I am not the greatest writer, but listening to her work will help you understand why I believe she should be considered for MPG Rising Star award.
