Cleo Sol: ‘Rose in the Dark’

Rose in the Dark is a throwback to the heady days of classic British soul music, the likes of which without exaggeration can sit comfortably with Soul II Soul, Sade, Loose Ends and Omar. Astonishingly this is Cleo Sol’s debut record, one that has been described as a modern classic, impressive both lyrically and musically. Alongside frequent production collaborator Inflo, Cleo has managed to put together an album that has touches of 70’s jazz, 80’s soul and 90’s neo soul whilst still being full of modern sophistication, it’s a record that might be described as instant vintage. With opening track ‘One Love’ Cleo demonstrates her skill with glorious harmonies that then lead us into ‘Why Don’t You’ a song that has gained more than twelve million views on YouTube due to her ‘Colors’ classic performance. As though to emphasise the tracks massive appeal, the song was also prominent in its near entirety in Sky Televisions highly successful series ‘Gangs of London’.
